What They Couldn’t Take: A Memoir of Survival From Familial Sex Trafficking is now available for purchase at Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and Kobo!

Little has been published about familial child sex trafficking in the United States. In What They Couldn’t Take: A Memoir of Survival from Familial Sex Trafficking, Adira James sheds light on this part of the human trafficking prism. Through the lens of her vivid flashbacks and the situations most seared in her memory, James shares the abuse that was inflicted on her by her parents, other family members, and the men she was sold to for sex.

Throughout her memoir, James shows how she survived her childhood through sheer will, dissociation, living in her vibrant imagination, and escaping to the outside world when possible. She strives to bring hope to those who suffer by sharing the positive techniques she has used on her journey to feeling free. These techniques include writing, moving meditation, therapeutic practices, and artistic expression. James also instructs readers on what to look for to uncover trafficking situations and offers advice on how to help those who may be trapped in the industry of child sex trafficking.

In Sunbeams Through Blankets: An Inspirational Guide to Surviving Familial Sex Trafficking, Adira James, author of the groundbreaking memoir What They Couldn’t Take, sheds light on the familial element of the human trafficking spectrum by describing her vivid flashbacks and the abusive situations that have been most strongly seared into her memory.

Along with sharing how she survived her abuse, she discusses ways for survivors of trauma to heal and grow based on techniques that she has used successfully, including art therapy. In this book, in addition to her poetry and prose, she has included full color images of her art works.

James strives to bring hope to those who suffer. She also hopes to inspire agency in those who read her book, encouraging them to help save children who are trapped in the grips of the inhumane industry of child sex trafficking.

In this guide, James hopes to galvanize the reader’s inner strength. She believes wholeheartedly that healing isn’t a straight trajectory, and that being a warrior isn’t like being in a race for perfection. This guide helps readers to understand that life is fluid, and so is healing. Therefore, being a warrior means you are maneuvering through the maze of life and allowing yourself to work towards present moment happiness.

This book speaks to everyone: survivors, therapists, teachers, doctors, law enforcement professionals, social workers, and more. James’s guide helps readers realize we are all warriors and we can come together to help stop familial child sex trafficking.

Let’s continue to make a difference!
